Cisco Debuts Certified Container Management at DockerCon 2017

by Scott Hogg, on Apr 25, 2017 12:52:25 PM

DockerCon launched in 2014, but this year saw the biggest crowd. Held April 17-20 in eclectic Austin, Texas, the conference catered to all levels of Docker expertise and featured talks and hands-on labs for developers, system admins, DevOps, and management.

For me, one of the highlights was learning more about container networking configuration and automation. Now that hybrid IT is becoming a necessity for many enterprises – with containers being used in both the cloud and the data center – it’s a challenge to find a container management system that can create a single policy configuration that applies to different types of infrastructure.

Enter Cisco Contiv. Leveraging promise theory, this networking fabric facilitates consistency of configuration and policies for all your containers, including those that connect to Cisco network switches or may reside on Cisco UCS servers and FlexPod systems. The result of a strategic alliance with Docker, Contiv is the first container networking product certified by Docker.

With layer-2 and layer-3 container connectivity, as well as overlay networking using VXLAN, Contiv is quite powerful. It also features the same rich policy configuration as Cisco ACI, making it easy to synchronize policies and automate networking for both your containerized environments and your data center.
